Rejang Kahyangan and Baris Ireng are sacred dances performed as part of the piodalan ceremony at Pura Batu Kapas, Desa Adat Tengipis, Gianyar, Bali. The continuity of these two dances cannot be separated from the role of Krama Pengarep, a customary community group whose members are required by village perarem to perform ngayah. This study aims to analyze the role of Krama Pengarep in preserving the two dances, focusing on their customary social position, ritual involvement, dancer regeneration and value transmission, the function of Awig-Awig as a normative instrument, and the resilience of the tradition in responding to modernization. This study employs a qualitative approach with an ethnographic design. Data were obtained through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews with customary leaders and Krama Pengarep, and documentation of Awig-Awig, activity records, and dance performances. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with particular attention to the relationship between customary obligations, ngayah practices, and dance continuity. The findings show that Krama Pengarep functions both as ritual performers and as a social mechanism for cultural preservation. Regeneration takes place through the direct involvement of younger generations in ngayah based on a learning-by-doing principle, while Awig-Awig reinforces obligations across generations. The division of roles between female and male Krama Pengarep demonstrates that the availability of performers is integrated into the village social structure. Amid modernization and commercialization pressures, the community maintains a boundary between the sacred and profane domains. These findings indicate that the preservation of sacred dance is more sustainable when it is grounded in living community structures, ritual practices, intergenerational transmission of values, and customary authority.
