Problem solving is a mental and intellectual process in finding a problem in solving it based on accurate data and information, so that appropriate and accurate conclusions can be drawn. The HOTS question is an educational evaluation that tests higher-order thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the response and whether the application of the problem solving learning model could improve students' ability to answer HOTS questions on Elemental Chemistry. The subjects of the study were students of class XII MIPA 4 SMA Negeri 7 Denpasar in the academic year 2021/2022. The object of the research study was to understand the HOTS question-oriented elemental chemistry material and student responses to problem solving learning models. This type of research is classroom action research. In this study, two cycles were used through four stages of the activity process which included (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) evaluation and reflection. Collecting data with the technique of assessing student test results as numerical data while data collection using observation techniques for qualitative data. The results showed that (1) the application of the problem solving learning model could improve students' ability to answer HOTS questions on elemental chemistry (2) there was a positive response to students in applying the problem solving learning model to improve students' ability to answer HOTS questions on elemental chemistry.
